For this unit, there is a choice of two final projects. Students complete one of these projects. This will serve as the final assessment for the unit.
Project Choices:
1. The Newspaper
You are serving as a news journalist in WWI. A major event has just taken place and you are responsible for writing the front page of news for your newspaper. Your front page will need to include:
Go back to “The Great War” web site that we used as a source in Lesson 1. http://www.pbs.org/greatwar/ Locate the timeline feature of the web site. Choose a significant event that took place during WWI. This needs to be an event for which you can fulfill all of the above requirements.
Gather all the data you’ll need to complete the assignment. You can search the Internet for information on your event. Take notes, and keep track of all of your resources. Use Excel to organize data so that you can organize it and use it to meet the table and chart requirement.
Once all of the newspapers have been completed and printed, they will be hung in the hallway. The class will then take a Gallery Walk.

2. The Scrapbook
You are taking part in the war effort during World War I. (You can be a nurse, a doctor, a medic, a soldier, a pilot, a paratrooper, a new photographer, or an interpreter. There are many other options to choose from. If you have an idea, talk to your teacher. ) Each day brings new challenges and experiences.
Create a scrapbook that tells a story about 10 days of your war experience. Include snapshots, personal reflections, descriptions of people you meet, places you visit, the trench you are fighting in, etc. Also, include in your 10 day experience, at least one major event that took place during WWI.
Depend upon the events presented in "The Great War" web site and on the experiences of the characters in Band of Brothers and All Quiet on the Western Front to lead you in writing about authentic war experiences. Think about the stories you heard about on NPR's Story Corp, and about the experiences you discussed with the veteran you interviewed.
To complete this project, use Microsoft Publisher. Create a book that looks like a diary. Remember, you are at war. Your diary would not be brightly colored with clip art. Make your project look like a diary from the early 1900's that has been used in the least desirable conditions.
Once all of the scrapbooks have been completed and printed, they will be put on display in the library.
